How To Do Tub Clean In Washing Machine

The function of a soap bar is to remove the dirt and clean the clothes but have you noticed how the soap gets dirty after you use it? Just like this, a washing machine gets dirty after each wash. So regular maintenance is a must for your washing machine to work at optimum performance.

This article will mainly show youhow to clean a washing machine tub, but we will also touch upon other areas likethe dispenserand theexterior part, which alsorequire regular cleaning.

What Are The Different Types Of Tubs?

While purchasing a washing machine, you must have come across the front and top load washing machines. Apart from the different features in these two washing machines, the main difference is how the drum/tub sits. To understand this, let us look at the front load and top load washing machines.

Top Load Washing Machines

Top Load Washing Machine

For a top load washing machine, the clothes are loaded from the top. So for this washing machine, the tub sits vertically. Top load washing machines can either be semi-automatic or fully automatic washing machines.

Top load washing machines are of two types –agitator and impeller top load washing machines. The former tends to wash clothes faster, but the latter is known for its high efficiency and performance. Also, an impeller top load washing machine can hold more per load and uses less water for washing.

Compared to a front load washing machine, a top load washing machine ischeaper, economical, and easier to use. However, a front load washing machine has better performance, uses less water, and has a higher spin speed (shows how efficient the water extraction process is).

Front-Load Washing Machine

Front Load Washing Machine

The drum/tub for the front-load washing machines sits horizontally. This means that the clothes are loaded through the front panel, not the top of the washing machine.

Compared to both the agitator and impeller top load washing machines, a front load washing machine has afaster drum rotating speed. Also, it is mild on your clothes as it hasmore wash programs like start/stop timer, hot/cold water supply, advanced child lock, and so on.

These washing machines areenergy efficient, less noisy, consume less water and electricity than a top-load washing machine. However, it is not veryconvenient for the elderly norpeople suffering from chronic back pain or other joint problems. So even though they are reliable and efficient, it is not very user-friendly.

How To Clean A Top Load Washing Tub?

Things You Need–

  1. Tub cleaner or White vinegar and baking powder or liquid chlorine bleach
  2. Soft towel or micro fabric cloth
  3. Soft bristle brush or old toothbrush

Given below are the step to clean a top load washing tub.

Step 1 –Empty The Tub

Empty the tub off all clothes.

Step 2 –Tub Cleaner

Tub Cleaner

To clean the tub, most companies recommend a tub cleaner. They can either be in tablet, powder, or liquid form. Tablets can be directly added into the tub, while the powder or liquid should be added into the assigned detergent compartments. Add the cleaner according to the instructions given in the packet.

Step 3 (Alternate)– White Vinegar And Baking Powder

White Vinegar And Baking Powder

If they did not specify a tub cleaner, you could always opt for a homemade DIY cleaner. One such DIY cleaner is white distilled vinegar and baking powder. You can add about four cups of white vinegar into the tub for efficient cleaning.

Step 4 –Program Settings

Tub Clean Option

Close the washing machine lid and select the tub clean option and turn the machine on. If your washing machine does not have a tub cleaning option, set the washer to the highest water level and the temperature to the maximum, i.e., use hot water for cleaning as it is more effective than cold water.

In case you are opting for thealternate step 3, then first add in the white vinegar. Pause the washing machine after all the water pours in and let it sit for an hour or so. Compared to tub cleaners, white vinegar and baking powder are not very effective in removing the build-ups caused by detergents and hard water. So let it sit for an hour helps with the cleaning process.

Step 5 –Clean The Lid And The Dispenser

Cleaning Washing Machine Dispenser

During the waiting period, you can start cleaning the top of the washer and the detergent dispenser. You can use a soft towel dipped in hot vinegar water to wipe the washer.

Most dispensers and the attachments within are removable. Clean each part separately using a soft bristle brush (an old toothbrush also works) and warm water. Also, clean the area the detergent dispenser was kept so that water flows smoothly. Remember to replace the dispenser in its place after cleaning.

Step 6 –Final Step

If you follow the DIY method, pour one cup of baking soda and rerun the washing machine. Wait for the process to end to open the lid. Using a soft towel or a microfiber cloth, wipe the inside of the washer drum and the top.

Step 7 –Exterior Cleaning

Washing Machine Exterior Cleaning

Clean the exterior part of the washing machine with warm water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Avoid using spirits, solvents, or abrasive cleaner as it can damage the surface.

How To Clean A Front Load Washing Tub?

The steps to clean a front load washing machine are similar to those followed for a top load washing machine (refer to the previous subheading). The only difference is in step 5, i.e., apart from cleaning the lid and the detergent dispenser, we have also to clean the gasket.

Use a soft towel or micro fabric cloth and a diluted cleaning solution to clean the door and the gasket. To make the cleaning solution, mix ¾ cup of liquid chlorine bleach or white vinegar with hot water. Drip the soft cloth in the cleaning solution and wipe the door and gasket to remove lint.

Your Takeaway

Regular maintenance is a must for your washing machine to perform well. Excepts recommend cleaning after every wash, but this can be time-consuming, and a lot of wash is wasted. So, I would suggest cleaning your washing machine at least once a month to prevent build-ups and improve performance.
